By the week before Diwali, most Indian homes have a shelf of identical dry fruit boxes and sweets that will not all be eaten. Gifts that feel personal and actually get used are harder to find. Good ghee is one of them. It is traditional, it is useful in every Indian kitchen, and a well-made jar of bilona ghee is something many people would not buy for themselves.
Why ghee makes a thoughtful gift
- It is used during the festival. Diwali means sweets, diyas and festive cooking, and ghee is central to all three.
- It keeps. A sealed jar of ghee lasts for months, unlike mithai.
- It suits almost everyone. Parents, grandparents, new couples, families with children, colleagues.
- It carries meaning. Ghee has been offered and gifted in India for thousands of years, as we described in a short history of ghee in India.
- It shows care. Choosing a carefully sourced ghee says more than choosing the nearest box.
Gift ideas by recipient
For parents and grandparents. A jar of A2 Gir cow ghee for their table and puja. Many elders remember the ghee of their childhood and appreciate the difference.
For a family that cooks a lot. A 1 litre jar, or a 2.5 litre dolchi, which is both generous and genuinely useful at festival time.
For friends. A 250 or 500 ml jar paired with something small: a packet of good haldi, a box of homemade besan ladoos, or a set of clay diyas.
For new couples and first Diwalis. A jar of ghee with a set of brass or clay diyas and wicks, for their first puja together.
For clients and teams. A jar of ghee with a spice, in a simple, well-made box. It feels different from the usual corporate hamper, and it gets used rather than set aside.
Putting together a small hamper
- A jar of ghee as the centrepiece
- A small packet of turmeric or hing
- Clay diyas and cotton wicks
- Homemade sweets or nankhatai made with ghee (see nankhatai)
- A handwritten card, with a note on how to enjoy the ghee: warm a spoon over hot rice
Pack glass jars with some cushioning, such as crinkle paper or a folded cloth, if you are carrying or couriering the hamper yourself.
Sending ghee to family in other cities
Many customers order ghee delivered directly to relatives in another city. If you do, order a week or so before the festival, because courier volumes rise sharply in the days before Diwali, and let the recipient know a parcel is coming so they are home to receive it.
A note for bulk and corporate gifting
If you are planning gifts for a team or clients, order early and message us on WhatsApp first so we can confirm stock of the sizes you need, and discuss delivery to multiple addresses.
What to write on the card
Something simple works best. "For your Diwali sweets and diyas. Warm a spoon and smell it first." It tells the person that the gift was chosen with some thought, and it makes sure they try it the way it is best enjoyed.
For gifting, our A2 Gir Cow Ghee in a 500 ml or 1 litre glass jar is the most popular choice. Ghee ships free to every serviceable PIN code in India.
